The third grade completed their first Makers Space challenge of creating structures with specific materials that had to be at least a certain height. All met the challenge, but many used more materials than necessary, and this led to a nice discussion about both wastefulness and the idea of a budget. I explained these materials are costly, and that if I spend my whole budget in September, then the Makers Space will close due to lack of materials. They have also begun to learn about Forces in Motion, and have a good basic understanding of Newton's First Law of Motion.
The fourth grade Makers Challenge was to make something that does something. Many interpreted this to mean it moved or had a moving part. I saw cranes, cars, games, and more being created by small groups. I could hear them discussing ideas and making plans of action. They have also begun to learn about Electricity.
The fifth grade is busy still working on their Makers Space Challenge. They are creating Arcade games out of cardboard. They are working in small groups and collaborating on how to build their game. We will finish our games next week, and will invite the other grades to come play them on Tuesday, October 2nd, at lunchtime, in the courtyard. Advertising posters to go up soon. If you are around, come check it out and play the Glenwood Cardboard Arcade!
I always end class by telling the students to Stay Curious. To me, being a life-long learner -- someone filled with interests, questions, and curiosity -- is how to have a rich life that lacks boredom.
I appreciate the support of this new facet of the Science Lab. The students are very excited to create and build, and your donations of these items keep it afloat.
