A little background information about me and the music program.
From as early on as I can remember music has been my true passion. Over the decades I have been involved with Music, starting with school musicals, (I was a very passable Aladdin in 5th grade). At age 14 I played drums in a Beatles cover band. Alas, we broke up after a few weeks as we didn't have any instruments. Since that dubious beginning I have been in multiple real bands, usually as the lead singer. I've written hundreds of songs. Had a very unpleasant experience in the music biz. Performed hundreds of shows, toured, run a recording studio, (I still do) DJ'd (still do this too) Record live events. Recorded over 60 albums for other artists as well as my own. Written music for theater and video as well as dance. Been a sound designer for short films.. you won't know them... they were short for a reason, but the music and FX were good;-).
Basically if it's anything to do with music I've probably done some version of it. All of these experiences, led me, seemingly by accident, to teaching. This is the work I was always meant to do. I love it. Music is still my first love. I have never cheated, well maybe except for a long stint managing a restaurant..I used to love this too but thankfully it's now adistant memory.
Oh and I'm English, born in Manchester. Married with 3 kids and live in Oakland. I'm futbol mad. I play 2 or more times a week and still hope that Manchester United will come knocking at my door. I'd leave you for them.
About the Music program. It's performance based, meaning, we do a minimum of 3 all-school singing performances each year.
I believe more than anything else, that learning music should be fun. Having the kids work towards a goal, keeping them focused and letting them experience how powerful the process is, especially when they perform together, is very exciting and truly helps build confidence. Music class is a safe place for your kids to take a chance and try something new without being judged. There's lots of opportunity to play instruments and sing or dance. Often they discover a gift they never knew they had, which is thrilling. They also learn to about the importance of details and teamwork. If you're in the percussion section you'd better listen to your bandmates!
You may notice that we do a lot of our school wide music activities out in the open. This is less than ideal especially in the winter but we've found a funky workaround and it works. Soon this will change when the new MPR is completed and we can all gather comfortably in one space.
Music appreciation, movement and dance, introductory theory and rhythm games also play a large role in making music at Glenwood a unique and (I hope) a very satisfying musical experience for your children.
All grades will get to dance, play drums, xylophones, metallophones, as well as a wide assortment of weird and wonderful percussion instruments.
4th and 5th grade also get an introduction to the Ukulele. Feel free to drop in any time and join us in drumming or singing.
We are sorting out the concert dates for Halloween and the December holiday season as well as Spring Sing. I will keep you updated once things are finalized.
Mr. D. Music Wish List.
~ Acoustic Piano. Our very old upright piano died. Do you have a decent sounding Spinet style, upright acoustic piano taking up space in your living room? Do you want to donate to a worthy cause? You know who to call.
~ CD/DVD player
~ Weird percussion instruments electric or acoustic.
~ Electronic keyboards, drums, guitars that need a new home. Lot's of students ask me about this. I have a loan/donation program for those kids who don't have a musical instrument at home but are curious about trying.
Finally, last call 2nd grade parents. After school on Fridays.
Enrollment is open for Mr. D's After School Music Club. Class starts Sept 21st. Click here for more info. Enrollment closes on Wednesday.
Looking forward to another fantastic musical year at Glenwood.
