The Foundation Forum 2014 - v. 2

For roughly 20 years, the Glenwood School Foundation has existed with it’s main purpose to provide funding for Art, Computers, Music, Physical Education, and Science. And as it was in the beginning, funding these programs represent the majority of the GSF’s current budget.

As leaders of the GSF, we want to know whether these programs are focusing on areas that are most important to you and your children or do we need to reshape our focus.

Now is the time to share your thoughts and ideas.

On May 14 at 6:30 pm we will be having a special GSF meeting. Everyone is invited (regardless if you are a member or not) and we will be serving Extreme Pizza and drinks and at 7 pm we will have a special “town hall meeting” to discuss everything related to how the GSF spends its budget and to see if it still aligned with the needs of our school.

If you have ever thought about making suggestions or changes to the GSF’s current areas of focus, this is the perfect opportunity to share those ideas as we will be having an independent moderator leading the meeting. The GSF doesn’t have an agenda, but we’re hoping you will bring one.

And if you like the status quo, come have a slice with us and let us know that everything is going well. That’s also valuable feedback that everyone should hear.

In the 20 years of the GSF’s existence, this has never been done before so please take advantage of this opportunity to express your ideas and opinions.

Don’t miss this meeting as it could be another 20 years before another one is scheduled.

In hopes of keeping everyone more informed about the Glenwood School Foundation and how your money and efforts are benefiting all of Glenwood’s Eagles, we will be publishing a monthly update to keep our community informed.

We’ve received several questions about the iPads recently so that seems like a good place to start.

Through your generous donations, including one extremely generous donation, the GSF was able to purchase 30 iPads. Principal Marcucci used his funds to buy a storage cart that doubles as a charging station and cases for each of the iPads.

While the iPads were in attendance on the first day of school, implementing the technology presented some challenges for the district’s IT department. Glenwood was the first school to implement iPads on a large scale. Setting up Apple IDs and how to purchase apps were some of the initial challenges that had to be overcome.

By October the iPads were ready to go and were being checked out by the teachers. Maria Orendorff, our computer science consultant, sees them being used many ways including to help reinforce math facts and provide a creative outlet for the students. It is rumored that the third grade will be using them for a movie project.

We would like to thank everyone for supporting this endeavor. As our teachers continue to explore new ways to use these valuable tools, we look forward to the excitement they will generate amongst our Eagles.

Our next GSF meeting is on February 12 at 7pm in the multi-purpose room. Childcare will be provided and we encourage everyone to attend. We are currently discussing potential purchases for the school and your input would be extremely valuable.

Go Eagles!
