As it always does, a new year brought many new faces to our Eagle Nest. The board of your Glenwood School Foundation was no different. While board members Karen Russillo & Andrea Small (VPs of Finance), John Dasher & Suzanne Maloney (VPs of Fundraising), Ramina Winton & Erica Smith (VPs of School Programs), Caroline Jensen (co-VP of Community Building), and Val Brovelli (co-President) graciously reprised their prior year board member roles, the GSF welcomed new board members Sondra Lewis (Secretary), Tami McCall (co-VP of Community Building), Sarah Brewer (VP of Communications), John Rooney (Dad’s Club Chair), and Adam Treewater (Teacher Liaison).
The GSF-hosted Welcome Back Coffee event in August allowed us to reconnect with those Glenwood families we may not have seen much over the summer, as well as to meet the new, incoming parents. Another early year event, Fall Family Fun Night, has grown to one of the most widely attended and enjoyable dates on the GSF calendar. Our New Parent Liaisons, Joy Walker and Alicia Geyer, organized a new parent social at the lovely home of Joy & Jason Walker. It was a wonderful opportunity for some of the Glenwood staff and GSF board members to meet and mingle with those new parents in attendance.
The paddle raise proceeds from last spring’s Going Gatsby auction were put to work at the start of the year with the purchase of 40 new iPad minis for classroom use. With this enhancement to the existing stock of GSF iPads, these valuable teaching tools can now be made available simultaneously to multiple classrooms.
Our first big fundraising event, the Glenwood Bocce Tournament, was once again, a smashing success. Many teams arrived in festive costumes in the theme of their team names. An enormous thank you goes to Rebecca Cowlin, Adrienne Collet, Becca Mink and Sara Mullen. These ladies brought this idea to life three years ago and have been coordinating this event since. We’re so grateful for all of the volunteers and donors who make this night possible.
For several years many folks have been lamenting about the poor condition of the basketball backboards on the upper grade playground. In this year’s budget, the GSF membership authorized the purchase of 4 new backboards. The installation of these backboards and supports was a herculean task. As usual, the Dad’s Club came through for us in a big way. If your child enjoys shooting hoops on the shiny new backboards and rims at Glenwood, please say thank you to Brian Nute, Allan Jensen, Chance Thorpe, Mauro Alencar, Nick Guelfi, Dwight Paulsey, Jake Thompson, and of course, John Rooney.
We recently hosted a presentation from child development & behavior specialist, Diane Provo, in the MPR. Michelle Franchetti suggested Ms. Provo and along with our School Programs team, arranged for her to come speak at Glenwood. Ms. Provo’s breadth of knowledge and her lighthearted delivery were well received by the many parents who attended.
Your GSF has so many terrific events on tap for the remainder of the school year. Fundraisers like the Read-A-Thon, Crab Feed, Auction and Book Fair are all on the horizon. Also upcoming are community builders, the Daughter’s Dance and Son’s Night, on successive weekends, both of which are provided free of charge by the GSF to the Glenwood community.
Our community is so remarkably generous and supportive of the GSF. Everything you just read about cannot happen without all of you. Your donations to the Kids Thrive annual fund, your participation in our fundraising events, and all of your volunteer efforts make all field trips and Glenwood’s encore programs, Science with Tracy Price, Computers with Maria Orendorff, Physical Education with Jim Hallroan, Art with Molly Blauvelt, and Music with Stephen Duffy, possible. Your generosity is also evidenced in the contributions you make to our Thanksgiving Food Drive and Holiday Toy Drive. Thank you, Eagle Nation, for all you do for our kids. It may sound cliché, but it truly does take a village, and our village is second to none. Have a very happy Thanksgiving.
