Dear Glenwood Families,

As we reach the end of another wonderful year at Glenwood Elementary, I wanted to pause and take note of this amazing community and all of you who enhanced this year for our students.  We live in such a special place, and the degree to which we all pitch in, whether through fundraising, volunteering in the classroom, building community, or supporting staff is simply exceptional.

Since I last wrote in November we’ve had several community building and fundraising events.  In December, Jaclyn Guelfi and Tami McCall led a merry group of carolers through the streets of Glenwood.  Aided by hot chocolate and undeterred by the onslaught of December rains, parents and students spread holiday cheer.  It’s a wonderful annual event, and should not be missed.  December also brought the beginning of the Read-A-Thon fundraiser.  Cecelia Yu again ably took the lead of the event and students logged an unbelievable number of hours over winter break reading.

In January, Kelly Merrick and Cheryl Riley, aided by a team of Glenwood dads in the kitchen, threw our annual Crab Feed at Loch Lomond.  The attendees feasted on crab and danced the night away.  This is always one of our most popular nights on the school calendar, and this night was no exception.  Camille Williams led the culture club and honored black history month by celebrating those African Americans making history in film, science and historical music.  Students also submitted visual arts and essays in support of the celebration, and their impressive work adorned the school office walls.

On April 1, we had our annual gala auction event.  This year’s theme was the Glenwood Prom, and the attendees came in their most fabulous prom attire.  Kathryn Elia and Keala Landry chaired the event and were helped by a dedicated team of helpers.  This event is a staggering undertaking, and all who were involved with the event should be proud of their efforts.  Our very own band, Detention, got everybody out on the dance floor to end the festive night.

Spring also marked our annual Used Book Sale, led by Giselle Block. It is truly remarkable to see our students so eagerly descend on the MPR to find their new favorite book.  Huge thanks to Tabitha Baker for organizing the Daughter Dance this year.  The girls and their parents danced the night away and took silly pictures in the photo booth.  Kathryn Elia organized a fantastic Son Fun night and, with the help of Coach Jim, the moms took on the boys in a ruthless game of dodge ball.

Mr. D’s Spring Sing was a perfect capstone to this year.  Aided by the leadership of Caroline Jensen, the sound work of Tom Holmes, and the help of dozens of other parents and teachers, Mr. D led the students through songs by artists like Ringo Starr, Louis Armstrong, David Bowie and Coldplay.  The students serenaded the parents and the event also showcased dance routines and impressive soloists.  Bravo!

I also want to take this time to recognize the amazing work the GSF Board did this year.   The Board worked tirelessly to ensure that the vision of the GSF was executed and that our children’s education was second to none.  It was truly a pleasure to work alongside this dedicated group of parents:  Co-VPs of Finance, Karen Russillo & Stephen Roth, Co-VPs of Fundraising, Nicole Klock & Suzanne Maloney, Co-VPs of Community Building, Jaclyn Guelfi & Tami McCall, VP of Communications, Sarah Brewer, VP of School Programs, Will Klesius, and Secretary, Sondra Lewis. Also, thanks go to our Teacher Liaison to the GSF, Adam Treewater. I also want to recognize our Dad’s Club chair, Evan Sims. He led the Dad’s Club on a school beautification day and assembled our new benches, hosted Poker Night, and is putting together our annual year-end BBQ.  Kudos Evan!

I want to end by thanking each and every one of you.  It is impossible to quantify how much gratitude I have for each one of you.  This community rallies together in a way that is unparalleled and there are too many of you to individually name.  Whether you helped in centers, pitched in at Field Day or Rockin’ Run, drove on a field trip, teamed up to help put on one of our fundraisers, or gave financial support, your contributions are valued and appreciated beyond words.

I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable summer season and I look forward to seeing you all in the fall.  GO EAGLES!

Best,
John Dasher
GSF President
