Dear Glenwood Families,
Upon nearing the conclusion of another school year that seemed to pass in the blink of an eye, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect back on what was an amazing year at Glenwood Elementary, and another successful year for the Glenwood School Foundation, and thank some of those who helped make it possible.
Since our last Foundation Forum in November, we’ve had some incredible fundraising and community building events. In December, we had our first annual Holiday Caroling event. This idea was the brainchild of GSF board member, Tami McCall. She and fellow VP of Community Building, Caroline Jensen, brought this idea to reality. The kids and parents trekked through the streets of Glenwood drinking cocoa and singing songs. Everyone had such a great time and this event will no doubt be part of the Glenwood Holiday experience for years to come.
The Crab Feed in January, flawlessly executed for the second consecutive year by Kelly Merrick and Cheryl Riley, proved to once again be one of the highlights on the Glenwood calendar. Considering the challenge provided by an uncertain local Dungeness crab season, Cheryl and Kelly went above and beyond to make this night happen.
The GSF auction, our annual gala fundraising event, requires months of planning and hard work. The auction chairs, Suzanne Maloney, Kerrie Malone, Tami McCall and Laura Berta and their entire team (too numerous to mention) deserve such a tremendous amount of gratitude for all their efforts. This year’s auction, Studio 54, was held at a new location, the Embassy Suites. Guests came dressed in their best 70’s regalia and mingled, dined and danced the night away to classic disco. We felt like we were catapulted into New York City circa 1977
Part of the mission of the GSF is to help foster a strong community at Glenwood. After Spring Break, we held two of the kids’ favorite community building events, the Daughter’s Dance and Son’s Night. Sincere thanks to Karen Russillo (Daughter’s Dance) and Kathryn Elia (Son’s Night) for leading these events. Seeing the parents and daughters dressed up, the sons playing games with Coach Jim and busting a move to the DJ, and the smiles that it brings to our Eagles is such a great reward for the GSF.
Mr. D’s Spring Sing event highlighted exactly why our music program at Glenwood is second to none. This year’s Spring Sing, featuring songs from Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and John Denver among others, along with dance routines, soloists and much more, was perhaps the finest Spring Sing ever performed. Thank you so much to Caroline Jensen, Stacy Taaffe, and your team of volunteers for coordinating, and to Tom Holmes and Cindy Chung for all you’ve done to make this production what it is.
We’ve also had other events where those volunteer leaders deserve recognition. Thank you to Gisele Block for putting together the Used Book Sale back in December. Thank you to Camille Williams for the creation of the Culture club. Those kids in the Culture club did such a marvelous job honoring Black History Month. Thanks also to Reily Urban and Sarah Marovich for once again leading a wonderful Book Fair this Spring. And a round of appreciation to Kate Bailey for organizing our series of Dine Out & Donate fundraisers (and thanks to the various restaurants for your contributions – Celia’s, Roadside BBQ, Whipper Snapper and Range Café).
I’d be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to recognize your GSF board members for an amazing job well done this past year. It’s been such an incredible reward, and a lot of fun, to work alongside such a capable and dedicated group. Thanks to our Co-VPs of Finance, Karen Russillo & Andrea Small, Co-VPs of Fundraising, John Dasher & Suzanne Maloney, Co-VPs of Community Building, Caroline Jensen & Tami McCall, VP of Communications, Sarah Brewer, Co-VPs of School Programs, Ramina Winton & Erica Smith, and Secretary, Sondra Lewis. Also thanks go to our Teacher Liaison to the GSF, Adam Treewater. And we surely can’t forget our Dad’s Club chair, John Rooney. He was able to rally the Dad’s Club for several projects, a great Poker Night, and what I’m sure will be a tremendously enjoyable year-end BBQ.
We also like to take this opportunity to thank those parents leaving the Nest who have given so much to Glenwood over the years. A huge thank you goes out to former GSF board members Julia Wong (President) and Jo Pocock (VP of Community Building). Not only were they outstanding in their roles on the GSF board, but they also were rock star volunteers. Thank you to John & Cindy Chung for all those wonderful spring concerts, disaster preparedness, and a seemingly endless amount of time and energy devoted to bettering our school community. Thanks to Rachel Street for being our HeadsUp representative and an amazing all-around volunteer in so many capacities. Thanks to Terra Condit for all of her work over the years on the auction. We’ll certainly miss Reily Urban and all of her efforts in making our Book Fair a great experience for our students. We can’t thank Jana Mannina enough for running our Spirit Wear program over the last couple of years. Thank you to Laura Berta, Elise Rankin, Jill Sheehan, Kate Siegel, JodyLee Meenaghan, Kari Paulsey, Margo Leardini, EddiMarie Burgess, Jeannie Grant, Brad Wong, and Susan Marrinson for all you’ve given to our school community. And of course, last but most certainly not least, Koorosh Khashayar and his amazing work as the Dad’s Club chair! We’ll miss having you and all the contributions you’ve given to our community. And please forgive me if there’s anyone I may have missed. There are so many of you that have given so much to make our Eagle’s Nest the special place it is.
Sincere thanks go to our entire parent community that has supported us this year with their time, participation and donations. We hope you have a very happy and safe summer season and we look forward to doing it again next year! GO EAGLES!!!
